So Shea Moisture’s “Organic Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque w/ Sea Kelp, Argan Oil & Shea Butter” hair mask is made with organic ingredients and is intended to “heal, grow and strengthen” hair. Now I have never used Shea Moisture products before but this mask has none of the nasty ingredients all most all hair products do. I saw it at Walgreens and thought I would give it a try since it was such a “clean” product and I do have “dry, damaged hair.” I applied to my hair as instructed and let it sit under heat for 15 minutes.
Results: Honestly it was no bueno. My hair felt completely unconditioned. I tried leaving it in and that did not work either. This might just be too gentle for my hair which is used to non-organic products and heavy processing.
Well I am never one to ditch a product just because it does not do what I expect. Afterall the product is paid for, especially this $10 masque. I decided to try using the hair masque for shaving my underarms. I know this is random, but follow my thinking: My underarms are VERY sensitive. Organic shea butter with Sea Kelp and Argan Oil sounded very soothing so I put two and two together. Plus I already use those $1 conditioners for my legs (way gentler than shaving creams, trust) so this higher end product def had to work for this too. Awesomeness! I actually had soft skin after shaving – this never happens since I cannot moisturize my shaved skin or it will explode in a rash. This is like miracle shave gel without the smelly and harsh ingredients.
So my final thought is while this product was too gentle to penetrate my damaged hair it was perfect for my sensitive underarm skin. I used very very little and the tub has lasted me quite some time. To really preserve it I use it only after a few shaving sessions, when I can see my underarm skin is getting irritated. I would suggest this product to those with sensitive scalps – the amount of moisture it brought to my skin and its soothing abilities make me think this product could work for others with serious sensitivities. I give it 4 stars even though it did not work for my hair, because it left my skin so soft and caused no irritation.
